Week 4- "The Sock"

This piece was very intriguing to me because of the almost emotionless narrator, and her apparent lack of emotion gives off so much. You can tell that, though she is still possessive of her husband and still has some sort of sweet feeling for him, she's trying her hardest to be accommodating; to not be known as the "bitter ex-wife", to keep everything together so that her son doesn't grow to resent either parent. You can tell she's almost being taken advantage of because of this, the fact that her ex husband asks that she takes care of his mother, knowing that she'll agree because of how accommodating she's been thus far, and you almost get the sense that she knows it too. Her little victory, the only revenge she really takes, is when she doesn't remind her ex husband that his sock is in his back pocket, that she lets it go and she lets him feel foolish even for just one slight moment. Her sort of flat tone throughout the piece indicates a person who is really emotionally spent, someone who doesn't even have the energy to be upset, someone who has been reduced to finding small pleasure in very, very small moment.
