Week 6- What Sacagawea Means To Me
What intrigues me the most about this piece is the constant shifts it undertakes. First you have a second person narrative, explaining a future in which American people will pay to experience some fun in a park, and exit said experience with a better appreciation for Sacagawea. The rest of the piece is told in a first person narrative, however the overall message of the piece develops and continuously changes the opinion of the reader, who is almost lead to anxiously await the conclusion. While there is discussion on the negative effects of colonialism, the point of the piece is to show the good that came with the bad. That the United States is certainly not without its faults, but it's not without its triumphs as well. The piece finally ties together with the author's personal views on the country he lives in, a country he does in fact love, and how Sacagawea is a major inspiration for that. Overall I believe these shifts definitely add to the reader's understanding of the point being made by the author; being given information that seems contradictory in purpose, only to find that it is in fact pointing out the contradictions that are prominent in this country's history.
