Postcards from the edge of Consciousness
I really enjoyed this piece. The way the author opened with a recollection of her own experiences successfully set the tone of the piece and laid the foundation for the rest of the text. By interchanging narrations from her own experience and factual evidence and history regarding the subject, she was able to keep the readers interest while also delivering important information pertaining to the subject of the piece. In the opening, she talks about the setting, comparing the REST chamber to a seventies-era Jacuzzi, giving it a personal feel, while also describing her own emotions (being nervous with anticipation etc.). Without the personal feel of the essay, it would have been quite bland: just a history and information session on REST and what it is. By including what she went through, she was able to connect to the audience on a greater scale and make it a more entertaining, realistic piece that is relatable to her readers.

I completely agree. She described her experience in such vivid detail it added a desire for me to try everything she mentioned. I especially thought when she described bumping into the side of the tub and being shaken and disoriented about the different sensory feelings going on through her body it was a really strong indication of a real experience that is not near perfection. The whole idea of sensory deprivation was also a new concept to me and it was neat to learn about it and attempt to feel the sensations through her personal anecdotes.
