week 6: time and distance overcome:

The piece "time and distance overcome" offers an interesting subjugation, and although I'm not that fond of it, i think there is a lot to be said about Biss's wonderful use of subtext. the thing that astounds me most about this piece is that she never says says a thesis; but she manages to prove a point none the less - no where in the passage does she outright state that the advent of telephone polls cause lynchings all around the state, yet the reader is able to take this away from the piece as a whole. also as was mentioned in class, Biss uses complex metaphors to relate himself and the loss of innocence that all things experience to the telephone polls whose use was once just to connect, and now serves to drive people apart. through her whole piece Biss does a wonderful job of showing not telling, and letting the reader gather their own ideas on the subjects which she presents.
